Preparing for Winter Gardening in October

When you feel strong First Bite in the breeze and you see the songbirds detachment to the south, and the trees are filled with colors of fire support, you know you can not be a weekend curled up by the fireplace with a good book. Not for long.

Although the weather is still gardener-friendly, you must shorten your "to-do" list for the coming of late fall and early winter. It is now time to attack your lawn and garden by planting your spring bulbs, buying and maintaining your trees and shrubs, make your lawn care late fall, using common sense strategies for irrigation, building a compost bin and making your own compost, controlling the many common garden pests, and winning the war against the weed-whacking before the sudden appearance of inconsistency, the winter cold and enveloping.

Planting Perennials

Plant spring flowering bulbs until the ground freezes, and prepare your tender but tenacious perennials for seasonal changes to come. Remember that in the milder climates, bulbs can still be divided and transplanted. Plant hardy bulbs anytime before the soil freezes, but it is best to plant early enough so the root system can grow before winter. In some climates, you can plant until Thanksgiving or even Christmas. Late-planted bulbs develop roots in spring and may bloom late. But they will arrive on time next year.

Be sure to position the bulb at their proper depth. They should be planted to fund their rest at a depth of two and a half times each bulb diameter. In well-drained or sandy soil, plant an inch or two more to increase the duration and discourage rodents.

Bulbs look best planted in groups. It is necessary to use a garden spade instead of a bulb planter, which encourages you to plant in isolation. Set side by side bulbs and plant groups of them in holes the size of a plate, or dig trenches and curves position the bulbs in the background. Water your bulbs after planting to stimulate the roots to grow.
