Problems with the painting aluminum Happening Anyone with an aluminum cladding is much more aware of the paint chalking problem. Just rub your hand over the old coating and painting old limestone will be more your Palm. Trying to make the paint stick to what could be a real problem. This is due to oxidation of the paint. Siding manufacturers originally referred to this problem as an advantage. They called, self cleaning, such as paint literally washed the house.
vinyl siding is also an old problem. UV light fades vinyl siding over time and the siding becomes very unsightly.
Many unfortunate homeowners and contractors have experienced terror, when they repainted their homes, to discover the new paint peeling off a few months later. The two problems with more aluminum and vinyl siding can be overcome with proper cleaning, surface preparation and repainting.
Cleaning, you'll need to rent a powerful pressure washer with at least 3000 psi. You want a pressure washer powerful enough to eliminate most of the chalky old paint from the siding or aluminum, to eliminate any accumulation of dust on the old vinyl siding.
From the top layer of the coating and work your way down. You'll need to keep the pressure wand fairly close to the surface coating to effectively remove the old paint. In some areas, you can see that the paint off to bare metal. Be careful around windows, corners, soffits and doors. The water pressure can be forced behind these areas causing damage. You can add TSP or other cleaning solutions in the tank molds, algae or other grime built. If you use a cleaning solution, be sure to completely rinse with pressure washer. You must leave your house to dry for several days in a dry, sunny prior to painting.
If you are repainting vinyl siding or aluminum coated vinyl siding, you may need a surface-Glosser. It is a solvent type product used to eliminate any shine on the surface and to help your first coat to adhere better. You'll have no trouble finding a good de-Glosser at your local paint store offers.
Request, I like a commercial type sprayer. It will draw the paint directly on your 5 gallon buckets of paint through the hose and gun. These documents are available for rent at many locations rental tools and even some paint supply stores that supply contractors. If your paint is real high quality latex, it will be thicker than regular latex paint and will require more powerful airless sprayer.
Priming This step is also critical that the previous step. In fact, cleaning and surface preparation steps make or break the outcome of your project.
I like a latex paint additive called emulsifying bond for the first layer. Emulsion Bond is a bonding agent that you add to the first layer of paint or primer, to help bind the old surface.
I buy the best grade latex paint outside, rather than oil or other solvent-based paints. Latex paint seems to hold the expansion and contraction of the siding very well. The high quality latex paint I buy needs no primer. "I add the binder directly into the layer of color first. Check with your paint supplier or not to use a primer. The basic rule is, if in doubt, use a primer. If you use a primer, add the bonding agent before application. There are also liaison officers available for oil or other solvent-based paints. One type is called penetrol. They are usually available in a paint supply store contractor.
Many entrepreneurs spot prime areas, especially where the metal is exposed. I do not need to boot because it can lead to an uneven looking top coat. When I put a coat of primer, I prime the entire house. This provides a uniform surface finish later.
