Painting Light Fixtures

I just bought our house and he has the shiny gold buttons and ugly accessories and everything else, I was updating it is simply not in the budget right now to replace all. I bought the expensive thick hammered Finnish rustolem to employ them. I also bought a dream to use for sanding Ruff to the surface. Does anyone have some advice on what is the best way to do this? Advice or tips? Thank you for any help!

you must use a primer first. then apply a light coat of paint, let dry, sand lightly and apply a topcoat.

use a blowtorch, then sand lightly with fine sandpaper or wire wool
