Painting countertops? Has anyone painted their kitchen counters? If yes, how did they go? Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you
notme hey ...
The following is a copy / paste my reply to another person with a similar question a few days ...
case of a kitchen counter that you think of the painting, please do not do it ... While there are several products that adhere to plastic laminates well prepared (with more or less success, btw). .. here are just a few caveats:
paint system you choose must be waterproof to a variety of cleaning solutions, solvents, alcohols (including bleach and vinegar, abrasive scrubs, etc.)
paint system (First, middle and top coat) should be able to resist - and not soften when subjected to - accidental contact with boiling water, sauces, grease, hot coffee spills etc. (the "no softening part" eliminates most conventional coatings)
the paint film must also be able to withstand accidental contact with hot stoves, pots, pans dishes etc. without blistering or softening ... (Again, most conventional coatings are single component removed) ...
the paint film must also be able to survive the occasional use as a chopping block when cutting vegetables, fruits, etc. cheese, flake or chip in the food ...
Finally - and very important - this film does not paint the port - or provide a food source - germs, bacteria, mold can, and will affect all food products that come into contact with the film paint.
Yes, there are paint systems that will accommodate all these concerns, but honestly - by the time you (preparation) the surface properly, (b) Start with a layer capable of adhering firmly to impermeable surfaces such as laminate and able to serve as advisor occasional cutting without chipping or peeling, (c) end with a product (or products) that is resistant to cleaning solvents and abrasives - do not support the growth of bacteria - and not structurally change when subjected to high temperatures or extreme temperatures ... it's less expensive - and you'll be much happier if you just installed new laminate ...
I was in the paint business for 35 years in application, sales, training, management and the formulation of the product ... I am currently the industry as an independent consultant and I am considered an expert in the field ...
I hope this info helps ... success

Painting Formica Counter Tops
Q. What kind of paint you use to paint formica kitchen counters?
A. Some people got lucky when the paint Formica counter tops. I recommend you clean the surface you want to paint with a good degreaser like 409 cleaner. After cleaning, then sand lightly with fine grain sandpaper the equivalent of 320 grains, again wash the surface of the counter
with degreaser to remove the sanding dust and to ensure that the surface is good and clean.
After the surface has been cleaned and is completely dry, you can coat the surface with a two-part epoxy coating. I recommend that you stop in a visit to your local paint and discuss this project with them. I am sure they have the products you need to accomplish the task.
Please be aware that coatings and solvents are chemicals and therefore you should always pay attention to the handling procedures and be prepared to wear protective clothing such as masks, gloves, coveralls, etc. For More information on the health and safety for the coatings and solvents you wish that we use is strongly recommended that you contact your local office
coating supplier. If possible, spend the extra step and look for this
information on the website of the publisher of the product.
