Here are some helpful tips from more than 40 years of installing epoxy floor joints and urethane coatings on Fortune 500 company concrete floors and in basements, garages, and decks. These tips can help you avoid mistakes that can limit the life of your floor.

There are three main steps to making your floor project: planning and preparation, repair and coating. This article is the first in a series of three, and provides planning and preparation.

General guidelines for applying an epoxy coating to your floor:



  1. Do no harm.



  2. Investing in the preparation produces the best value, (cost divided by years of service).



  3. What chemicals and equipment to do the job.



  4. What can go wrong will go wrong, unless you think ahead.



  5. The technique is what separates mortals from Rembrandts.



  6. An ounce of prevention is better than cure.




Now we'll start with tips on how to plan your work and prepare your soil.



  1. Plan.

  14. . Once you prepare your floor, nothing in the air eventually end up as dirt on the floor. So do not wait too long to make your coating. Bugs, leaves, dust and lint can potentially compromise the quality of the job you end up with .. Water collects in cracks and holes in the floor. If you vacuum or wipe with a cloth, you will not have the problem of unexpected delays due to finding water still in your speech after the surface dries.
    . Adhesives are often a problem to remove on floors. But if you let the adhesive, your coating is like an egg. A hard exterior with a soft inner shell often leave the crack and shine away.
    . If you use a floor-based solvent and coat on all asphalt stains, solvents, asphalt will bleed into the finish spoil the color. Use a scraper to remove all the asphalt. Then follow with some degreaser or mineral spirits.
    . Gum is made of modern synthetic rubber and is unaffected by most cleaners or solvents. Itching is the most common method of removing gum, but a jet of hot water 190-degree work fast if you have one.
    . Gas often come through your porous concrete floor. Methane and radon gas are very common in the concrete slabs and move their way through the concrete causing bubbles in the finish. But bubbles are most often caused by the chemical reaction between your ongoing cleaning and floor. One or two rinses scrub reliable are necessary to help avoid generating bubbles of gas in your floor.
    Gum, glue, asphalt, some paints, splashes of concrete, silicone sprays of Rain X, and Tire Shine are some flaws that you might need to scrape or grind by hand in the preparation a floor.
