Things to do in New Zealand - South Island New Zealand's South Island is the larger of the two main islands, but the house is only about 25 percent of the population. He is best known for its beautiful mountains carved by glaciers, fjords, Milford Sound, Mount Cook, gorgeous beaches, flora and fauna unique, whale watching and adventure tourism.
Christchurch, the largest city of the island, also known as the garden city, is located on the east coast of South Island. The city is beautiful with trees and parks throughout the Avon River and through the middle. Christchurch is a great destination for travelers seeking adventure sports.
Some of Christchurch are essential:
- Willowbank Wildlife Reserve offers visitors the opportunity to look at, touch and even feed some of the wildlife native countries, including kiwi birds, wallabies, KEAS, lemurs and freshwater eels. The reserve also includes evening cultural performances and Maori a restaurant that is open for lunch and dinner. The reserve is open from 10:00 to 10:00 p.m. every year, with day and evening visits daily operations.
- Christchurch Botanic Gardens are located in Hagley Park, with the River Avon flowing through. The gardens are abundant with flora and fauna native to New Zealand, as well as plants worldwide. Open 365 days a year, free admission.
- Orana Wildlife Park is the largest wildlife reserve in New Zealand. Located on 80 acres of park-like, animals are housed in their natural habitat with few barriers or fences, allowing visitors to see up close and even feed some of the softer species. Open 10 am - 17 hours a day, closed on Christmas Day.
- Arts Centre Weekend Market is a market for world-class hotel located in the Historic Centre of Arts, with nearly 100 vendors selling local crafts, jewelry, clothing and fresh produce. The contract also includes an international food fair and live music. Open every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year.
- Take the cable car 1,500 feet up the Christchurch gondola station for unbeatable 360 degree views of Christchurch, Canterbury Plains and Lyttelton Harbour. At the summit, visitors can browse the small gift shop, explore the historic center, or relax in the restaurant and a cafe.
Dunedin is the second largest city on South Island, and also the oldest city in New Zealand. This coastal city is best known for being one of the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the southern hemisphere, and for its amazing wildlife. Dunedin is home to the Royal Northern Albatross, Yellow-eyed Penguins, and several species of seals and sea lions.
Some of the most popular attractions of Dunedin include:
- Penguin Place, home of the Yellow-eyed Penguin Conservation Reserve, is located approximately 30 minutes from downtown Dunedin. Guided small groups, which go all day, visitors to the colony for a close-up viewing of birds. Reservations are required.
- Elm Wildlife Tours offers visitors the opportunity to Show Sea Lions, Fur Seals, Albatross and Yellow-eyed Penguins in their natural environment, including Elm own wildlife sanctuary limited conservation. Private tours or small groups are offered throughout the year. A proper level of fitness is required for visits.
- Dunedin Public Art Gallery is one of the best New Zealand art galleries, which holds the main collection of public art in the city. The gallery showcases a large collection of indigenous art in New Zealand as well as rotating exhibitions throughout the world. Open all year except for major holidays.
