Indian Wedding Art

For my review of art, I've chosen to focus on Indian culture, marriages. but what is the exact role of elephants in a marriage? ive heard a lot about the different idea, but not sure of the answer. im drawing of an elephant on my piece, but I'm taking notes in my sketchbook, so it would be a great help?
