Hotel Art RomeWhere to stay in Rome? and what to do?

Hello everybody! My husband and I are going to Europe for our first time in April '10 to our annivarsary. we stay in first Greece, then ends in Rome. We have art in the hotel in Athens and in Mykonos Hotel aelolos, but when I started looking around for hotels in Rome, some of them almost $ 2,000 for 6 nights for 3 4 stars! our hotel in Mykonos is a 4 star hotel and it cost us $ 370 for 5 nights. So my question is:

Where could we stay in Rome will not be more expensive than our flight?

$ 600-700 or less really would be preferable ... I am 23 years old and he has 28 so nightlife does not bother us and would in fact be a bonus.

and also my sister is in Germany right now and she keeps talking about hostels? Would you think that?

and finally, we intend to take many visits to all the historical sites while we are there, and perhaps from island to island of Mykonos, but if anyone has any fun activities, nightlife and daytime , please suggest away! However, keep in mind that we do not want to be bankrupt when we return ... we'll be in Athens 4 nights, 5 nights Mykonos and Rome, 6 nights. Thank you all for your help!

PS We are already immersed in myknonos! and my husband is convinced that the THA we will be able to rent a car in Athens and Rome by car (drive 10hrs!) so any help we get to Rome from Athens or Mykonos would be greatly appreciated too! We thought a cruise to 1-2 days, but how are they? Thank you again!

Hi there

I'm afraid I do not know Greek, so will leave that for someone else, but I know in Rome, so here are my ideas on this.

If you want a very good budget hotel in Rome, take a look at this page:

http://www.explore-italian-culture.com/c ...

which gives details of a budget hotel 3 stars shining in the center of Rome. It is close enough to sites within walking distance, located in a shopping street and near a couple of very good restaurants.

On the same page you will find links to some more expensive hotels, but if you go to Rome on a budget for my suggestion would certainly be the first. More expensive hotels tend to be bigger and not as friendly in my experience.

Hostels will be cheap but they are mostly located around the station and the area is not shining in the night. They will not be much cheaper than the hotel anyway. For a birthday, I would certainly not an inn.

Rome is a beautiful city and in April the weather should be nice and warm, without the oppressive heat of summer. This page:

http://www.explore-italian-culture.com/r ...

provides information on what to expect in spring in Rome.

As for things to do, Rome is so rich in historical sites, you'll always be busy, but my advice would also not try to do everything. Choose a few things you really want to see, and make sure you factor in enough time to sit and have coffee and watch the world go by. All this is part of the Roman experience.

To go to Rome to Athens, my advice would be to have a look on Google Maps, which is what my husband and I use when we travel from UK to Italy. There are ferries from Greece to Italy who took the 'cruise' bit (sort of!), But you'll need to travel to another part of Greece that you plan so that it can not worth it.

It sounds like you plan a wonderful vacation and I wish you a very happy.

When you are in Rome, I recommend.
