Can you suggest a good gothic novels? When I say "gothic" I do not want the "goth" subculture. Not all children who wear black leather and lace, and paint their faces white and red lipstick and lots of eyeliner and dye their hair unnatural colors.
I mean gothic literature. Like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Phantom of the Opera or Dracula. Stuff like that.
Those you mentioned are all very good. In addition to Frankenstein, which was already mentioned, I recommend:
-The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde
-The House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne
-The Mysteries of Udolpho (or Italian) by Ann Radcliffe
-A long fatal love chase of Louisa May Alcott
-The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Collins-The Woman in White (or The Moonstone) Wilkie
-The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe (or other of his works)
The Turn of the Screw-Henry James
If you want a more modern novel, you can read some of the works of Victoria Holt. His novels of romantic suspense generally Gothic elements in them. They are also pleasant reading. You might try The King's Castle, Shivering Sands, The Time of the Hunters Moon, Devil on horseback and many others. The only one of his, I did not like was the black opal.
If you want a brilliant satire of Gothic novels, you should read Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.
BTW: Wikipedia has a very good section on Gothic fiction and gives examples of much more than what I have here. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_nove ...
I hope that helps and you find something you really like.
